YouTube Video Description

Mr. Karnes and I are on a Norwegian Cruise and today we are in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This is our first time in The Netherlands (Country #34 for us) and we couldn't be more excited to try some of the amazing foods that they are famous for! In a previous video we explored the Anne Frank House, Our Lord in the Attic a historic canal house with a hidden church in the attic, visited several other small museums (cheese, tulips, cows) and had a look around Westerkerk Protestant Church. This episode is all about food. We start with a coffee break at a cute little cafe where we sit for a while and watch the bikes zoom by! For lunch we are in search of my favorite French Fries or Frites as they are called in Amsterdam. We walk to Heertje Friet Shop to try theirs. Fries in Amsterdam are treated almost as seriously as a religion. The locals call fires "patatjes" and this shop is said to have some of the best. We order Patat Oorlog as the Dutch nickname for fries is patatje and oorlog means war, this literally translates to "war fries". Mayonnaise, ketchup and peanut sauce (pindasaus) are the sauces tradionally eaten with fries in Holland so, we are going traditional! The "war fries" could go to war with any other fries I have had and would win! This shop also sells Bitterballen, another Dutch meat-based snack. Bitterballen dates back to 200 years B.C. After trying this unique snack we were glad we could say we had tried it but I'm not sure we will go out of our way to try it again. Our next food adventure is onboard a canal boat. We have booked a one hour canal cruise with a cheese and wine pairing. The cheese and the wine were great but the canal cruise is a MUST do if you are in Amsterdam. It was the best way to see the city and get a feel for just how many canals, bridges and houseboats there are! This was one of my favorite things we did! I couldn't come to Amsterdam and not try a Stroopwafels! Bakers put a layer of gooey caramel syrup between two round wafer thin waffles, creating a chewy cookie-like dessert that tastes incredibly good alongside a fresh cup of coffee or hot chocolate! A MUST try in Amsterdam or anywhere in my opinion! Our final food stop was arranged through the Eat With app. We booked this for the night before but our ship could not dock because of high winds. Our hostess was so kind and rescheduled us for the very next evening, I'm sure rearranging her own schedule to accommodate us. She was so kind, so genuine and we had a great time tasting Dutch wine, Dutch cheeses and making dutch pancakes, trying an apple strudel made from a recipe her mother used and learning so much about the Dutch culture! It was an amazing evening! One we will not soon forget! If you are ever in Amsterdam you really should book some time with this incredible lady. You won't be disappointed or hungry! Eat With- Discovering Amsterdam's Culinary Scene with Fusina It was an amazing day in Amsterdam! Mr. Karnes and I are always amazed when we reflect on our adventures and see just how many fun things we did, how many amazing people we met and how beautiful this world is! Thank you so much for watching! We REALLY appreciate you! If you have not subscribed, please do! It would mean so much to us! We have many more adventures coming so please keep watching each Sunday for a new one! We know that we are "Living the GOOD life!" and we hope that you are too! Probst!
