Cunard as well as P&O Cruises have announced an extension to their pause in operations - a result of the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, both of which are back in British waters after disrupted world cruises, have had their itineraries cancelled up to and including 31 July 2020. Queen Elizabeth had been based in Australia since December 2019 with cruises cancelled since mid-March. The ship was due to reposition to Alaska for a mid-year season, however following Australia’s ban on cruise ships, Queen Elizabeth recently made her way to the Philippines where she remains at anchor. Sadly as a result of the pandemic, all 2020 Alaska sailings on board Queen Elizabeth, including voyages up until 8 September 2020, have been cancelled. Sister company P&O Cruises UK have announced similar pause extensions to their operations, with the majority of their fleet also in warm lay up in Britain. Their new flagship Iona is also impacted with the ship being moved directly into layup at the shipyard in Germany, delaying her maiden voyage. Despite ongoing bad news, the cruise industry is resilient. I recently spoke with maritime historian Bill Miller about the future of the cruise industry and its past resilience.
