Creator's Key Takeaways
I think the Mountain Timber Market is absolutely worth a visit when the ship stops in Kalama for the day.
AXE THROWING IS certainly an activity you don't think of doing on a cruise, but it's something I'll remember for a long time from this one.
It's always a great way to end each day, gathering in the river lounge to enjoy a nice show.

This is episode #4 of my series of videos about a Columbia River cruise with American Cruise Lines on the cruise ship American Encore. In this episode, the ship visits Kalama, Washington... and the passengers head out on excursions in the area. A few of us took the opportunity to do some axe throwing in a morning excursion, and then just about all of us opted in for an afternoon excursion to Mount St Helens. It's been 46 years since Mount St Helens erupted in a cataclysmic explosion in 1980. I guess there are probably a lot of young people that don't even know it happened! I do remember it, because my sister and brother-in-law are farmers in Eastern Washington, and a lot of ash dropped on their farm in the weeks after the eruption. It actually was a good thing for them, as the ash contained a lot of things that benefitted the soil on their farm, once they tilled and mixed the ash in to the dirt on their farm. After our excursion to Mount St Helens, there was an incident at the park next to where our ship was docked. I was flying my drone to get an aerial shot of some boys playing baseball in the park, and two of the boys tried to hit the drone with baseballs. One of them came VERY close to hitting it. It was lucky they missed, because if one of the balls had hit the drone it would have knocked it out of the sky... causing a crash in to the ground, which almost certainly would have broken a very expensive drone.
