Holland America ms Veendam Tour, Food & Entertainment (4K)

See what is it like aboard the Holland America Veendam cruise ship, including what entertainment & food to expect, including menus. We were on the Veendam in July 2018 for a 14 night Cuba cruise sailing out of Boston. The staff was friendly, especially at the dining room. The food was pretty good, though the buffet was just a bit inferior to our other Holland America cruises (on the ms Amsterdam & Eurodam). The buffet offerings were still very enjoyable, however. Food at the main dining room was excellent, and the Dive In Cafe on this ship tasted even better than our other pair of HAL cruises. We did have some service issues at the pool deck when eating at the Dive In there- asked the roaming bartender there for water (there was no water nearby), and she was very hesitant, then said she would bring it, and never did. Entertainment was pretty solid- the singers & dancers had good performances, and the guest entertainers were pretty funny. It is certainly not a party ship, however. Activities-wise we enjoyed Ping Pong & playing some tennis (this is one of the few cruise ships out there with a Tennis Court). The Veendam is showing her age a bit. On a couple occasions there were AC issues at the Lido Market buffet, and at some point there was condensation at the ceiling there. The shower at our cabin had trouble keeping a constant temperature. The ship's internet was extremely slow and expensive- to avoid frustration we'd recommend avoiding buying an internet package on the Veendam unless they have upgraded the service. Also if you are someone who likes to sleep in- it could be difficult as loud announcements from the cruise director are broadcast through hallway ceiling speakers as early as 8 AM at times. Like other older HAL cruise ships, it was nice that the Veendam also has self-service laundry facilities ($1 for the washer, $2 for dryer). The Holland America Veendam review verdict- we enjoyed our cruise overall, despite some of the issues we mentioned, and would certainly recommend to others.
