Icon of the Seas: Full Power Recovery Test (4k)

On May 4th the Icon of the Seas set sail on a 7 night Eastern Caribbean and Perfect Day in CocoCay sailing. Sailing round trip from Miami she made stops in St. Maarten and St. Thomas as well as the addition of CocoCay in the Bahamas. On May 10th the shortly after the Icon of the Seas docked in CocoCay Bahamas the crew onboard began preparing to shut various systems and services down such as the water slides and flow rider. This was in preparation for a scheduled full power recovery test that ships are required to conduct. At 10am the announcement was made that the test was about to be commencing which meant that all power was to be shut off, which includes services such as the elevators and lighting onboard. As soon as it began the chill island (deck 15-17 pool deck) area was overtaken by a loud sound, potentially a pressure release from the LNG (liquid natural gas) system that requires power at all times to keep the volatile fuel in a liquid state. The funnels then each released a large black exhaust plume, the only time all voyage anything beyond a light white wisp was visible from the funnels. Even after the test was completed and power onboard returned to normal the sound on the pool deck remained for an additional 5 minutes before stopping.
