With the cruise suspension extended and more ships sold and possibly scrapped, the cruise lines were busy. Don’t worry if you are not current, we have you covered with our latest video covering all the major cruise headlines and news for July 19th. If you enjoy the video, please make sure to give it a BIG THUMBS UP! The CDC announced this week that it was extending the cruise suspension until September 30th. It was originally scheduled to expire later this month. While most major cruise lines had already cancelled up to this date, Royal Caribbean Group announced the following day that it was now suspending all cruises from September 15th until October. We also learned this past week that Holland America Line will be selling four ships. Two vessels, the S-Class Maasdam and Veendam are transferring to one company in August 2020, and the R-Class Amsterdam and Rotterdam are moving to Fred Olsen Line in September 2020. Holland America Line will cancel cruises for the four ships’ deployments, with some select itineraries being assumed by other ships in the fleet. Two more ships might be leaving the Carnival Cruise Line fleet as well. Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Inspiration made maneuvers that would suggest they too will be scrapped. Carnival has not confirmed nor denied these reports. Currently, Carnival Fantasy is on its way to Turkey, which is known for its ship scrapping business. Other bans could be on the horizon from cruise ports. This fall, the citizens of Key West will vote on whether to ban cruise ships that hold over 1300 guests from visiting the island. In addition, residents could vote to limit the total number of cruise passengers visiting the island to 1500 a day. Residents health and environmental concerns are the chief reasons this potential ban is on the ballot. Viking announced yet another new river ship launching in 2021. The Viking Saigon will sail the Magnificent Mekong cruise tour next year. This 15-day trip includes hotel stays in both Vietnam and Cambodia bracketed by an 8-day river cruise. The ship will hold 80 passengers, with features including an infinity pool and outdoor rooftop bar. Finally, more popular cruise ports are announcing travel restrictions. Among these new health and safety measures, many of these islands are requiring current visitors to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test before entering the country. We reported last week that the Bahamas instated this precaution. Now, more destinations, including Aruba, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, St. Barts, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and Belize also require such documentation.
