YouTube Video Description

May 30, 2022. MidShipCinema's Peter Knego captures the 2021-built M.V. ROTTERDAM's passage up the River Maas on the morning of Holland America Line's newest ship's christening. Up on deck, it poured rain as the sun began to rise in the distance. As a huge, full arch rainbow formed above the ship, the ROTTERDAM passed her oldest fleetmate, the 1999-built VOLENDAM, which is under charter to house Ukrainian refugees. She next would encounter the laid up M.V. ASTORIA, which was built in 1948 as Swedish American Lines' STOCKHOLM (the ship that infamously collided with and sank the ANDREA DORIA in 1956). And then, in the grandest all the day's maritime encounters, the new ROTTERDAM saluted her namesake, the legendary 1959-built S.S. ROTTERDAM, which is now preserved in Rotterdam as a floating hotel and museum. The journey ends after passing the Hotel New York, the former Holland America Line headquarters, when the ship arrives at the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal. The video ends with the naming, itself, with Holland's Prinses Margriet doing the honors in the ship's state-of-the-art World Stage Theater. #halcruises #halrotterdam #ssrotterdam #cmvcruises #halvolendam #cruiseship #classicoceanliners
