Let me show you why it’s one of my favorites. The best part? You don’t need to book an excursion or pay for transportation. If you like exploring on your own and avoiding extra costs, San Juan is perfect. Step right off the ship and you’re already in Old San Juan — with specialty boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and historic streets just minutes away. I felt completely safe wandering here, almost like I was at home. Since this is U.S. territory, that makes sense — but it’s still refreshing in the Caribbean where some ports can feel a bit unnerving. You can spend hours exploring while soaking up the colorful architecture, plazas, and lively atmosphere. Right near the port you’ll also find local vendors selling handmade crafts and souvenirs. I picked up this little frog made out of shells — such a cute and affordable keepsake. And one of my silly traditions every time I visit? Popping into the two-story Marshall’s right near the port. It’s such a quirky surprise to find a big U.S. store here, but I love it and always find something different than at home. You may even score your next cruise find! San Cristobal Castle, is a must. For only $10, you get incredible views of the coastline and a fascinating look into Puerto Rico’s history. I was blown away by how massive it is — and the views from the top are honestly some of the best in the Caribbean. Plus, it’s great exercise to work off some of those cruise food splurges. So if your cruise stops in San Juan, forget the excursions. Just step off the ship and explore the culture, history, and colorful streets — and maybe even stop at Marshall’s to snag your next fun cruise find.
