YouTube Video Description

This latest Sailing Day features Cunard's legendary SAGAFJORD and Carnival's popular JUBILEE departing Los Angeles on a sunny April afternoon in 1995. The JUBILEE would continue sailing with Carnival until 2004 and was ultimately broken up at Alang after subsequent careers as the PACIFIC SUN and HENNA in 2017. SAGAFJORD, which was built in 1964 for Norwegian America Line (which was purchased by Cunard in 1983), would soon be retired from the Cunard fleet. She would suffer a disastrous breakdown in early 1996 during her world cruise, which ended up being abandoned off Hong Kong with the ship being towed to the Philippines for repairs. She was next chartered to Transocean Tours, a German operator, and renamed GRIPSHOLM, then, in 1997, she was sold to Saga Holidays, who lovingly operated her until 2009, when new SOLAS regulations forced her retirement. SAGA ROSE was eventually scrapped in Shanghai after a 46 year career as one of the most beautiful and luxurious cruise ships the world had ever seen.
