In August 1986 the Soviet Union's merchant fleet was dealt a cruel blow when the darling of the Black Sea cruise ship lineup, SS Admiral Nakhimov, was sunk by an unlikely collision. The ship had a bizarre and storied career having survived a sinking in 1945 while serving as a German hospital ship but tragically history would show that she had merely delayed the inevitable.
