Ever wondered where haunted houses get their animatronics, fog machines, masks, and nightmare fuel? We went straight to the source. TransWorld Halloween Attractions in St. Louis is the annual trade show where haunted house operators, horror industry professionals, and Halloween obsessives come together to see the latest and greatest in scare technology. We spent a full day covering the entire floor — and the highlight was the Dark Zone, where vendors display their animatronics exactly as you'd experience them in a real haunt — overhead lights off, effect lighting blazing, full atmospheric dread. It is absolutely something to behold. But the day didn't stop there. After the trade show floor we headed to The Darkness — one of the most celebrated haunted houses in the United States, conveniently located right in St. Louis. We filmed our entrance, discovered a secret bar hidden at the halfway point, shared our mid-house thoughts over a drink, and wrapped up in what might be the most impressive haunted house merch store we've ever seen. Then we changed costumes. The night ended at the legendary Heaven and Hell Ball — a full costume gala that completely exceeded our expectations. The level of craftsmanship in those costumes was jaw-dropping, and watching an entire ballroom of elaborately costumed ghouls hit the dance floor is something you simply have to see.
