Cruise lines have already indicated that ships will be returning in a staggered roll-out. So, not all ships will be sailing once the CDC gives brands the green light in the U.S. to cruise. This is one of the major cruise changes due to the pandemic. Not only will there be less ships, these ships will be less full. To ensure social distancing, cruise lines will be sailing at a reduced capacity. Based on recent reports, somewhere between 50 to 70% capacity is what most cruise lines are indicating for the initial return to cruising. Along with less passengers, cruising after the pandemic will have different embarkation procedures. These will include temperature checks, and most likely, a rapid COVID-19 test before boarding the ship. Onboard, there will be more rigorous cleaning and enhanced sanitation during the sailing. Cruise lines will also install new ventilation systems, as well as the utilization of hospital grade disinfectants and UV light technology for more thorough sanitation. On a cruise, you won’t be able to escape social distancing. There will certainly be distancing at public venues such as restaurants and dining rooms, the theater, and even the pool deck.
