One of the most legendary moments in cruising, sailing around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. On board Celebrity Equinox we passed this remote and dramatic headland where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, a place long feared by sailors and rich in maritime history. Cape Horn sits at the edge of Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago and is guarded by a small Chilean Navy station and lighthouse, one of the most isolated postings in the world. Standing on deck and watching this famous landmark come into view was an unforgettable moment. After rounding the Horn we spent a day at sea crossing the Drake Passage. Known for its wild reputation, we were incredibly lucky and experienced what sailors call the Drake Lake, calm seas and smooth sailing between South America and Antarctica. During the crossing we were also given the exciting opportunity to visit the bridge on Celebrity Equinox. Seeing the ship’s command centre and watching the officers navigate these legendary waters was a real highlight of the voyage. From Cape Horn to the Drake Passage, this is one of the most iconic sailing routes anywhere on Earth.
