Sushi Excursion | Diamond Princess | Karato Fish Market

This video is the Fifth is our series about our cruise around Japan aboard the Diamond Princess. It was late morning when the Diamond Princess entered the Kanmon Strait headed for port in Shimonoseki City. Kanmon Strait is a narrow body of water is been a historically significant passage for transportation, commerce and war. After we docked at Shimonoseki, we boarded a bus for our excursion to Karato Market and Akiyoshido Cave. We were excited for the adventure! Located in Shimonoseki City, Karato Fish Market attracts professional chefs, the average cook and people of all ages looking for the freshest catches of the day. One of the highlights of the market is Iki Iki Bakangai, an event held on weekends and national holidays. Sellers will bring out their best catches and present them as sashimi and sushi for all to enjoy. It’s by far the most popular event for its high energy and delicious menu at fantastic prices. Lucky for us we visited the Market on a Saturday and were able to shop for our lunch! We were most interested in trying the Fugu. Fugu is Japanese for pufferfish, famous for being both delicious and deadly due to the potent neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin, in the fish’s organs. Only specially licensed chefs are permitted to prepare it. The appeal lies in its subtle flavor, chewy texture, and the thrill of eating such a dangerous food, making it a luxury winter dish.  Opened in 1909, Karato Fish Market initially operated as a local street market before developing into one that supplies the rest of Japan with its local catches. This multi-story building offers a variety of attractions for visitors, such as the market with dozens of sellers and the restaurants on the upper floor which serves many of the fish you can browse below. In the market, you can window shop and marvel at the seemingly endless varieties of fish for sale. For Karato Fish Market, the Kanmon Strait is an invaluable source of fish. Outside the market along the harbor, we took in the beautiful views of the strait. After we purchased our sekectuon, we headed outside to enjoy our lunch by Kanmon Strait along with an ice cold beer.
