Friday 22nd September 2023 Southend "Pier of the Year" Celebration Cruise on the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer Waverley. 4-hour cruise visiting the Thames Forts at Shivering Sands, Red Sands & Knock John. Here Shivering Sands. This group was built near the Thames estuary for anti-aircraft defence and made up of several towers north of Herne Bay 9.2 mi (8.0 nmi; 14.8 km) from the nearest land.
