We had low expectations of this port but we managed to make a good day of it. The key issue is that there isn’t that much here with the focus being drawn to a Gondola ride and Zip Line from the mountain top. Not being fussed about the zip line we felt the Gondola ride would be good, hoping to explore trails at the mountain top. However we could not do this and you have to be accompanied by a guide if you walk any of the trails at the mountain top because of the risk from bears. That’s fine if there were guides in place but for us there wasn’t. So this meant we paid money to simply ride up and down the Gondola. Not great value. What we realised was that we could have booked a whole range of nature based activies from whale watching, fishing and bear sightseeing tours. These however have limited availability so are best booked in advance either as a cruise excusrion or with the operator direct. However at the bottom of the mountain we found an excellent if short walking trail. Then explored the cannery museum and shops. Then discovered the excellent Tlingit Tribal Dance. After we took a bus into the city of Hoonah. This had clearly suffered from the pandemic and the loss of tourism. Lots of places were closed. However it’s a nice place to walk round. The totem carving workshop was good to spend time at. And the coastal walk back to the cruise terminal provided breathtaking views. In the short the best bits of our day were the bits we didnt have to pay for. #cruise #alaska #icystrait #celebritycruises #alaskacruise #hoonah #icystraitpoint
