Marching bands are categorized according to function, size, age, instrumentation, marching style, and type of show they perform. Marching bands perform many songs, traditions, and flair from outside performances. Most high school marching bands are accompanied by a color guard who add a visual performances through the use of flags, rifles, and sabres.
