With only one day to explore the beautiful island of Madeira, Portugal, I focused on five things to see and do. I created an itinerary that would be somewhat of a loop, so that I wouldn't have to backtrack. My touring began with a cable car ride from the city of Funchal, up the mountain to the parish of Monte. It is a beautiful ride that offers vistas of the city, mountains and shoreline. Once up top, it is a short hike to get to the Jardim Monte Palace Madeira, which is a wonderful garden with exotic plant species. From there, I walked a short distance to the Monte Toboggans, which take you about half-way down the mountain. It is a popular tourist attraction, so make sure you give yourself some time to stand in line. After the toboggan ride, I took a taxi the rest of the way down to Funchal, where I explored both the old and new town areas. I finished my day by walking along the shore and then up to the Catarina Park, which has a beautiful lake and wonderful vistas of the island. For solo travelers, Madeira is a safe and friendly environment. If you do the toboggan run, just know that they charge more for singles.
