My Best Cruise Ship Sailaway Time Lapse!
YouTube Video Descriptionβ
Sunset in San Juan, Puerto Rico, presented a beautiful backdrop for the sailaway of the Viking Sea cruise ship. I've shot a lot of time lapse videos during cruises, but this might just be the best of them all! As the ship slips away from the dock in Old San Juan, you get a look at the sunset before the ship makes a big turn to head out of the harbor and past the historic Castillo San Felipe Del Morro, the fort at the harbor entrance that a lot of people just know as "El Morro". As we sailed past El Morro and through the channel at the harbor entrance, I couldn't help but think of the historical importance of this place. In 1595, Sir Francis Drake led an armada of 27 ships to the harbor entrance in an attempt to invade and ransack the city's gold. However, things didn't go well for Drake that day, as the troops at El Morro fired their cannons and repelled the invasion. In fact, they put a cannonball right through Drake's cabin! Not to long after, he contracted dysentery and it ended up killing him. Sailing out the channel on a cruise ship is not quite as dramatic as I imagine things were back in Drake's time, but it sure is a beautiful thing to watch. In this time lapse video, we compress about 25 minutes of real time down to a minute and a half of video. This video was shot with a GoPro Hero 7 Black, from the deck of the Viking Sea. The ship is almost completely a non-smoking ship, but I unknowingly set up my camera in the one small part of the ship where smoking is allowed... and a gentleman smoking a cigar can be seen on the left side of the screen during a portion of the video. I regret that this might create an impression that smoking is rampant on this ship... when in fact, the deck area where I placed the camera is the ONLY portion of the entire ship where smoking is allowed. I'll be posting more videos from my cruise on the Viking Sea in the coming weeks. Spoiler alert: I totally loved it, and was delighted to discover that they had even made a few changes which I had suggested in a video I made about Viking Star about a year and a half ago. You can see that video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eID9qlcVFzE Financial disclosure: Viking Ocean Cruises invited me aboard the Viking Sea as their guest, at no charge. However, they had no control over the content of this video.
