Once on the throne, King Neptune and his helpers initiate a reading of the charges against the volunteer Polywogs, and then the Crossing the Line ceremonies take place. King Neptune is keeping alive a seafarers' traditional that's over 400 years old! It's all in good fun, and everyone who participates volunteers to be part of the zany antics. Luckily, this was our second time crossing the equator on a cruise ship, so we weren't candidates for the ceremony.
