❄️🤖 Disney’s free-roaming Olaf animatronic is real, and he’s even more magical in person. I got a special preview of the next-generation robotic Olaf at Disney Adventure World in Disneyland Paris, and seeing him just a few feet away was so surreal. The videos online are amazing, but in person? It hits different. He walks. He waves. He shimmies. Olaf just walks around like he stepped straight out of the movie. The expressiveness is what gets you. His eyes, his mouth, the way he moves — Imagineers used reinforcement learning, a type of AI, to teach Olaf how to walk and replicate his signature bouncy, cartoon-like movements. The tech builds on what Disney learned from the BDX droids in Galaxy’s Edge, but pushed significantly further to handle a magical snowman whose body doesn’t move like anything in the real world. And the detail on his snow texture is stunning. Iridescent fibers catch the light and shimmer like fresh snow, making him feel alive even when he’s standing still. I do want to note: this was a preview, and Disney is still finalizing the show. What I saw might not be exactly what guests experience on opening day. But it is really exciting to see Disney’s most incredible animatronic up close. Olaf appears as part of the Celebration of Arendelle show on Arendelle Bay in the new World of Frozen, opening March 29th. He’s one of the biggest reasons to visit Disney Adventure World, and honestly, one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen Imagineering pull off.
