Join us in the charming and historic port city of Ålesund, Norway as we continue our incredible journey aboard the Sky Princess with Princess Cruises through the Norwegian fjords! The approach into Ålesund was one of the most beautiful port arrivals we've ever seen. Surrounded by sea, islands, and mountains, the city is located on Norway’s western coast and is known for its unique Art Nouveau architecture and rich Viking heritage. Ålesund is said to be the birthplace of King Rollo, the Viking who became the first ruler of Normandy in France! We arrived with no official plans—but that’s part of the magic here. If you're visiting Ålesund on a cruise and didn’t book a shore excursion, you’ll find hop-on hop-off buses and local tour vendors just outside the port. Instead, we decided to explore the city on foot and take it slow. Right away, we stumbled upon a food truck rally by the pier and couldn’t resist grabbing a plate of fresh dumplings and dessert. A surprise foodie find with excellent quality! As we walked through town, we noticed how many of the buildings shared a similar style. This is because of the great Ålesund fire of 1904, which destroyed nearly the entire city. After the fire, Ålesund was rebuilt in the distinctive Art Nouveau style by young Norwegian architects, making it one of the most architecturally unique cities in Europe. Our culinary adventure continued at a Thai street food restaurant, where we enjoyed Pad Thai and a surprisingly delicious smash burger while people-watching. We explored further through local boutiques, waterfront harbors, and bakeries, stopping for lattes, desserts, and even brown cheese ice cream—a Norwegian specialty made from goat’s milk. On the way back to the ship, we passed a watertight door that protects the lower part of the city from flooding—a great reminder of how Ålesund is built to withstand harsh coastal weather.
