Cruising into Kirkwall on a Sunday posed a dilemma. Most shops are shut on Sundays. Bars and cafes are open however. Wanting to see some of the historical sites we booked a cruise excursion. This was a bus tour taking in key sights on the island and a visit to the jaw dropping Skara Brae Stone Age village. This site is simply outstanding and the 3500 year old houses have fireplaces, beds and mantelpieces. There is an excellent museum too. Some visited the nearby Skaill Manor House whereas we took a stroll on the magnificent beach. Bus back to Kirkwall for refreshments in a pub and an explore of St Magnus Cathedral which dominates the town.
