Ocean Cay was constructed using an existing rock outcrop along the western edge of Ocean Cay and eastward land reclamation from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. The Great Bahama Bank west of Ocean Cay forms a narrow shelf about 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) to a depth of approximately 50 ft. (15.2 m) prior to dropping abruptly into the Florida Straits.
