PANAMA CANAL - Transit Through the GATUN LOCKS onboard Island Princess Cruise Ship
YouTube Video Description↓
Captured on 25th December 2019, a 4K look at our transit through the old locks (Gatun Locks) of the Panama Canal onboard Island Princess. /// PANAMA CANAL FACTS The Panama Canal is an artificial 51 mile long waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. We are approaching from the Atlantic ocean, heading for the Gatun Locks. These locks consist of a three-stage process that lifts ships 26 metres and into the Gatun Lake. The locks also feature two transit lanes, allowing ships to travel in both directions simultaneously. The lock chambers have a size of 110 ft wide and 1,050 ft long, with a maximum operational length of 1,000 ft, known as the Panamax. These gates separate the chambers for each stage of the process. These gates are hollow and buoyant, each controlled with two 19 kW motors. These locomotives, called Mules, are used for steering and braking control for a ship during its transit through the locks. Each chamber requires 26.7 million gallons of water to raise the ship to the next level. The water is moved by gravity, and controlled by valves. This process can fill a chamber in just eight minutes. NEW VIDEO COMING SOON!
