About Episode 006: In this episode, we partner with Free Diving Santa Teresa to improve our breath holding in the “Apnea for Surfers” course. While my entire family is relatively comfortable in the ocean, you can never be too prepared when it comes to safety especially with Costa Rica’s unpredictable currents and strong waves. In this course, we learned a variety of techniques to relax and build co2 tolerance, which increased our static breath holding to over 3 minutes in just 2 days. The first day consisted of a 4 hour session on yoga mats, learning the different breathing techniques and exercises. On the second day, we were in the pool for 4 hours implementing these techniques and pushing past our mental limitations. Because we were students at Perfect Sunset School, we had an opportunity to use the learned techniques in the open water. We were lucky to have been able to add a freediving session to a Tortuga Island boat tour. The course physically and mentally challenged us to beyond our limits while building confidence under the guidance of a trained freediver, certified through AIDA, CMAS and FAAS. Since this video covers some breath holding techniques that may be dangerous for beginners, I advise that these only be practiced with an experienced instructor. And ALWAYS, dive with a buddy!
