On November 28th Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady set sail on a 16 night From Rome to Miami Transatlantic Voyage crossing both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Sailing from Civitavecchia (Rome) she made stops in various ports along the way. This was her first sailing after returning from Virgin Voyages first ever dry dock and completed her inaugural Mediterranean season as she sailed home to Florida. On December 4th while making a visit to Funchal Maderia we took the "Jaunty Monte Holiday in Madeira" Shore Thing booked through Virgin Voyages. This involved both a gondola (Teleférico do Funchal) ride up the mountain as well as a toboggan (Carreiros do Monte) ride back down it. The gondola system used by the island is nearly identical to the Disney Skyliner introduced to Walt Disney World with cabins that featuring seating for multiple parties offering a quiet glide up the mountain. The toboggan ride features a pair of Carreiros on the back of your toboggan to guide it safely down the mountain. You travel on public streets which means having to avoid traffic in addition to handling all of the tight turns on the way down. The toboggans are wooden with wooden runners creating the smell of burning wood in the air as you glide down the streets. Stroll through the mountainous village known for its fine properties, botanical gardens, and spectacular views. After taking in the sights, indulge in some tea, sandwiches, sweets, and chantilly in a local cafe. Head down to Livramento on a spirited toboggan ride before finishing your day with interactive history exhibits at the Madeira Story Centre Museum.
