Starlink On Cruise Ships Seems Like A Fail To Me -- Slow satellite Internet from SpaceX
YouTube Video Descriptionβ
I've done several cruises recently on cruise ships that used Starlink as their Internet provider... and I've come to the conclusion that the cruise lines are switching to Starlink to save money, not to provide better service. Let's have a discussion about this, in the comments section. Have you been on a cruise ship that used Starlink Internet? Has it worked well for you? Or did it leave you frustrated and disappointed? Why do all the cruise lines seem to be switching over to Starlink? Isn't it really a downgrade from the speed of the Internet service on ships that use some other provider? Leave your comments and let's discuss this! For anyone that doesn't already know... Starlink is a groundbreaking satellite-based internet service that was pioneered by Elon Musk and SpaceX. Starlink uses thousands of satellites in a low orbit around the earth to transmit the Internet to receivers on Earth. The satellites are launched by SpaceX. Because the orbit of these satellites is so much lower than other satellite-based Internet systems, Starlink can provide Internet service with a very low latency. But, as my testing on cruise ships shows, upload and download speeds seem to be lower overall than can be achieved by other providers. My early conclusions on this are based on a very small sample size... only two of the sixty cruises I've been on have used Starlink as their Internet provider. But compared to the Internet service I experienced on Carnival Celebration recently, where I was getting upload and download speeds over 60 mbps, Starlink sure looks like a downgrade from other methods of cruise ship Internet... at least so far. When I first heard that Starlink would be coming to cruise ships, I was excited about the news. I assumed that the cruise lines were doing this in order to improve the quality of Internet service for all the passengers. But now that I've experienced it for myself, I'm starting to think that the cruise ships are only jumping on the Starlink bandwagon to save money.
