Tropical Storm Erin Forms in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Erin officially developed in the eastern Atlantic on Monday morning and is forecast to move westward toward the Eastern Caribbean later this week, potentially disrupting cruise itineraries and impacting several popular ports of call. The National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory for Erin at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, reporting maximum sustained winds of 45 mph — well above the 39 mph threshold for tropical storm classification. Current models predict Erin will track west before turning north, passing near top Eastern Caribbean destinations on Friday and Saturday. Forecasters expect Erin to strengthen significantly, potentially reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher) by the time it nears the region. Ports that could experience at least moderate impacts include Barbados, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, and the US and British Virgin Islands. If the storm’s northern turn is delayed, the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and nearby private cruise islands may also be affected.
