Our journey begins at the bustling Montevideo Port for our City Tour of Montevideo. The first stop is Plaza Independencia, the heart of Montevideo. Surrounded by historical buildings, this central square features the grand statue of General Artigas, a revered national hero. We disembarked to explore the plaza, taking in the mix of modern and colonial architecture that frames the square. We enjoyed taking our time to understand the culture and history of Uruguay including the Gateway of the Citadel. This historic stone structure is a remnant of Montevideo's colonial fortifications. The tour continues to the majestic Palacio Legislativo, the seat of the Uruguayan Parliament. This grandiose building, with its neoclassical architecture and intricate details, stands as a symbol of Uruguay's democratic heritage. A visit to the Mercado Agricola offers a vibrant contrast to the stately Palacio Legislativo. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, filled with fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local delicacies. We have time to wander through the stalls, sampling Uruguayan treats and purchasing a souvenir or two. Next, the bus heads to the Carreta Monument, a striking sculpture depicting ox-carts used by early settlers. This monument pays homage to Uruguay's agricultural roots and the hard work of its pioneers. The journey continues along the coastline to Playa de los Ingleses. This small beach offers a peaceful retreat and stunning views of the ocean. Then our final stop, Plaza Virgilio, a beautiful park that offers panoramic views of Montevideo and the Rio de la Plata. We took the opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking scenery and beautiful sculptures. The park’s serene environment and the sweeping vistas provide a perfect ending to the tour. As the bus returns to its starting point, we reflect on the diverse and rich experiences of the day. The tour has provided a comprehensive exploration of Montevideo's history, culture, and scenic beauty, leaving us with a deeper appreciation of this vibrant city. We made a bucket list of places we wanted to visit and Joanne's choice was Antarctica it is a continent that she has always wanted to see but no way was she ever going to go in a zodiac so when we found a scenic Antartica cruise we just had to go. So we booked a cruise with Celebrity Cruises adding on some hotel days at the start and end of the holiday to explore Buenos Aires. Neither of us have been to the places on this itinerary previously. This cruise now means that we have finally visited every continent. So on this adventure we explore on our own and we also take ship excursions to maximise our time and experience. We're never too old to keep exploring, so please join us.
