Our new video shows the Barrachina restaurant. They claim that the Pina Colada was created at their restaurant in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The plaque outside says yes and we confirm the drinks are great! The Piña Colada has a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th century and is deeply associated with the Caribbean, particularly Puerto Rico. Its origin is a bit contested, but the most widely accepted story attributes the creation of the drink to Ramón "Monchito" Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1954. The Piña Colada’s creation comes from Restaurant Barrachina, located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to their story, Spanish bartender Don Ramón Portas Mingot invented the drink there in 1963. The restaurant even has a plaque commemorating this event, and many locals and tourists visit to try what they claim is the "original" Piña Colada. There are even earlier legends that suggest the Piña Colada's roots go back to the 1800s. According to one story, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí (also known as "El Pirata Cofresí") used to serve his crew a concoction of coconut, pineapple, and white rum to boost their morale. However, after his death in 1825, the recipe was supposedly lost until it was revived in the 20th century. The Piña Colada became Puerto Rico’s official national drink in 1978, solidifying its cultural importance to the island. Its creamy, tropical flavors are now synonymous with Caribbean vacationing and beachside relaxation.
