Most people travel to Alaska in the summer, when it is typically warmer, drier (usually), and the days are longer. Skagway was derived from sha-ka-ԍéi, a Tlingit idiom which figuratively refers to rough seas in the Taiya Inlet, that are caused by strong north winds. Literally, sha-ka-ԍéi means beautiful woman. The word is also a gerund (verbal noun), derived from the Tlingit verb theme -sha-ka-li-ԍéi, which means, in the case of a woman, to be beautiful.
