Welcome to Part Three of our series on how to become a Nomad. Today we talk about experiences v stuff and Swedish Death Cleaning. Here's the short answer. Stop buying stuff. Thats it, end of video. If only it was that simple. People, including us, attach memories to stuff and for so many people stuff sits in boxes, storage units, cupboards and anywhere else it will fit. When you become a Nomad one of the hardest and most time consuming parts of the process is going through all of your stuff and trashing, donating or giving it all away. Mentally it's draining, physically it's time consuming. Plan to start this early and be ruthless. Swedish Death Cleaning teaches us to clear it out, pass it to a relative if that is your wish or throw it away. Imagine you died tomorrow. Would you want your relatives clearing out your house and dealing with this. Perhaps you don't mind inflicting this on them but it's not their responsibility, it's yours. Keep what is essential to you. Photo albums and our Dog Ashes are something we will always keep, but it only means something to us, and nobody else. So when we die it's going in the trash. Family heirlooms can be passed on now rather than sitting in a dusty box. Make sure any last wishes you would have are dealt with before you pass. If you look at your life in that way you will buy less stuff. And if you want to be a Nomad less stuff is what you are signing up for. You may buy some souvenirs or items that remind you of a specific place but it is unsustainable. Don't live a consumerism life. It might not feel like it but less stuff is liberating. embrace it.
