http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The iconic sight of Odessa is the famous Potemkin Steps leading from the Black Sea up to the city center. These stairs were built to allow access from the Harbor below, to Odessa, built on a plateau above. Built between 1837-1841, their original name was Primorsky Stairs. It wasn't until 1955 that the Soviets renamed the steps to honor the Battleship Potemkin uprising. The staircase is fascinating because of optical illusions. When looking UP from the bottom, all you see is stairs. When looking DOWN from the top, all you see is landings. Passengers began the included Viking tour here before continuing past other important sights...
