Welcome back to Mer Cruises Solo! Today is day 11 of 16 on my solo South America and Antarctica cruise on the NCL Star, and it is our second day in Antarctica! It's also NEW YEARS DAY! Today we are seeing all new Antarctic sights; namely Elephant Island where the notorious Shackleton spent several months stranded - and it is not an inhabitable place (unless you're a penguin) although it is beautiful! We see tons of wildlife including many penguins frolicking across the water, and SO MANY whales! Our ship came to a standstill for half an hour or more as pods of whales just surrounded us - it was a sight to see and like nothing I've ever experienced or seen before. What an incredible day. We spend the afternoon cruising slowly around Elephant Bay and then start our trek back through the Drake Passage towards the Falkland Islands. I end the evening with a picture perfect view from my dinner table of the aft of the ship and a delicious meal.
