Creator's Key Takeaways

We got to watch a 3inute video watching them basically capture an eagle um that needed rescue and rehabilitation.

I appreciated that. But mom and I are going to head back to a gift shop.

Nicer than I imagined it would be. I had my doubts and I know Emma did too.

The alternative to them being homed in this Fortress of the Bear Center is that they are euthanized.

Creator's Tips & Advice

Make reservations for the free shuttle in advance, as it's not clearly communicated on the ship.
Book a guided tour for Sitka to learn from a local expert and save time.
Support local Alaskan artists when shopping for souvenirs.

YouTube Video Description

Our day in Sitka started early in the morning. We had a shore excursion booked, but it didn’t start until 11am, so mom and I disembarked around 7:30am and made our way into town on the free shuttle bus. The shuttle bus ride was beautiful and educational. It dropped us off at Centennial Hall, or what is referred to by the cruise ships as the Convention Center. We walked one block down and one block up from the water to get to the Saint Michael’s Cathedral, which was closed, but up that street was a little cafe behind the bookstore, called the Back Door Cafe. We had some breakfast and coffee, and both were delicious. After breakfast, we walked across the street and down a short alley to the Castle Hill Trail. Up at the top of the trail was Baranof Castle State Historic Site. It provided some important history of the hill itself and the town of Sitka. We shopped our way back to Centennial Hall, where we met Emma. I had sent her some photos of some things in the gift shops, and since we still had an hour before we had to meet for our tour, we took her up to that street in front of the Cathedral. We found some of our favorite souvenirs here in Sitka, specifically at The Cellar. After completing our shopping, we made it back to Centennial Hall with about 20 minutes to spare before our tour was to begin. Our tour was purchased through the cruise line. There was some mild confusion about which bus we were on, and which bus we were supposed to be on, but it was thankfully all cleared up before we left Centennial Hall. Our tour guide was spectacular. He gave us so many stories about his life and what it is like to live in Sitka, as well as history and facts about Sitka and our surroundings. Our first stop on the tour was the Alaska Raptor Center. Second stop was the Sitka National Historic Park. Our final stop was the Fortress of the Bear. Since our tour was set to end around 2:45pm, our tour guide graciously took us all back out to the ship, so we didn’t have to catch a last-minute shuttle bus to get back. We made it back onboard just in time for All Aboard time. We hadn’t eaten since breakfast before 8, and it was now 3:30pm, so we were all very hungry. We had lunch at Alfredo’s Pizza, a little bit of down time before dinner, and then dinner in the Main Dining Room.
