YouTube Video Description

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Marine Steve and I happened to be on a Sea Spirit Arctic Cruise, June 17, 2013 when a zodiac flipped during an excursion along the northern portion of the 14th of July Glacier in a fjord. An American woman was killed, three others injured and all 13 passengers thrown into the icy, arctic waters. All shipboard e-mail accounts were immediately cut-off, and passengers kept in the Ship's dining room until a helicopter evacuated the injured and dead woman to Longyearbyen. The sea was rough during the accident but we never felt threatened by the swell and I believe, based on other incidents seen during the many zodiac cruises was the accident was caused by driver error. Why was the zodiac so close to the beach and was the driver inexperienced? Just asking... Zodiacs are very stable under all kinds of conditions as long as driver and passengers pay attention! During another zodiac excursion among ice bergs, two zodiacs almost collided; our driver was busy pulling ice from the sea to examine and the other driver had binoculars glued to eyes, watching for wildlife. THAT was not funny! More details to follow later today on Travels With Sheila.
