We start our day with a sail-in party moored at the dock. Soon it is time to venture into the heart of Puerto Madryn where we find a lively town centre focussed around an expansive beach with shops, cafes, and restaurants. The main square, Plaza San Martรญn, is a vibrant hub where locals and tourists alike gather and street vendors sell handcrafted goods. The next day it's time to embark on a bus tour to Punta Tombo, home to the largest Magellanic penguin colony in South America. The journey through the Patagonian landscape is mesmerizing, with vast stretches of arid plains and distant mountains. Along the way we keep an eye out for the native wildlife. Arriving at Punta Tombo, we first spot Guanacos, a relative of the llama, which can be seen up close, grazing on the sparse vegetation and observing us! Their elegant, tawny forms stand out against the rugged terrain, providing a glimpse into the untamed beauty of the region. The reserve is a protected area where these charming birds come to nest and breed. Walking along the designated trails we observe penguins tending to their nests, waddling along the beach, or diving into the ocean. The penguins' curious nature allows for close encounters, and their comical antics are endlessly entertaining. Rangers at the reserve provide educational insights, enhancing our understanding of the penguins' life cycle and conservation efforts. The sight of thousands of penguins in their natural habitat is nothing short of spectacular. The bus ride back to Puerto Madryn offers time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences. The stark contrast between the bustling city life and the serene, natural beauty of Punta Tombo highlights the diversity of this remarkable region. Returning to the ship there's a renewed appreciation for the coastal charm and the incredible wildlife that calls Patagonia home. We made a bucket list of places we wanted to visit and Joanne's choice was Antarctica it is a continent that she has always wanted to see but no way was she ever going to go in a zodiac so when we found a scenic Antartica cruise we just had to go. So we booked a cruise with Celebrity Cruises adding on some hotel days at the start and end of the holiday to explore Buenos Aires. Neither of us have been to the places on this itinerary previously. This cruise now means that we have finally visited every continent. So on this adventure we explore on our own and we also take ship excursions to maximise our time and experience. We're never too old to keep exploring, so please join us.
