I (Alisa) am doing something I have never done before… traveling outside of the USA without Jason. I will be taking a river cruise on the Danube with AmaWaterways from Budapest to Vilshofen, with stops in Bratislava, Vienna, Krems, Spitz, Linz and Passau. But first, I have to get to Budapest! This is three flights for me from Alexandria, LA (AEX) to Atlanta (ATL), then an overnight flight to Amsterdam (AMS) and after a 3 hour layover, the final flight to Budapest (BUD). It is a looong travel day! Overall the flights go rather smoothly, but I was surprised by how small the seats were on the overnight flight! I didn’t even have enough room to cut my food in my dinner! It was with Delta on an Airbus 350… if you can avoid this plane, do it! On the bright side, I was able to get Stroopwafels in Amsterdam!! Once we arrived in Budapest (my friend Sarah and I), we check into our hotel and head towards the river for a local Hungarian dinner of potato stew… and then a night time ride on the river for an Unlimited Prosecco Tour. I have always said that the world is more magical at night, when it is all lit up! And seeing Budapest from the river is the best way to see it! The Parliament building stands out, but so many more landmarks! Everywhere you look is breathtaking! And not just the buildings on land, but the bridges as well. Each bridge has it’s own style and feel to it… and, of course, they are illuminated too. The best way to learn a new culture is through the food and an organized tour with a guide who not only know the food, but the city! A walking food tour will give you so much more than something to eat! You will learn the history and special locations of the city as you walk from one stop to another. Stop one is Dose Coffee for strudel and coffee. We could choose any type of coffee, tea or hot chocolate we want (hot chocolate for me) and both apple and poppy seed strudel. Both were so good, but the poppy seed was a delightful surprise! It was so much better than it sounded and had a sweet chocolate taste to it. Stop two is Retro Langos for ‘Hungarian pizza’. This dish really isn’t pizza… it is fried bread with sour cream, lots of garlic and a local Hungarian cheese. It doesn’t sound tasty but oh my gosh it is!!! So surprisingly good! But be prepared to taste garlic for many more hours! Stop three is for goulash at Mokka Cukka Wine Bar… and since it is a wine bar, we also chose from three local wines for a tasting. Here, our tour guide also gave us a shot of Palinka… a local fruit spirit that is very strong… think moonshine!!!! The goulash was delicious and was even better once I added the paprika and garlic paste… yum!!! Stop four is Rokfort Restaurant for potato and sausage casserole. This may have been my favorite dish! The potatoes were so buttery, the sausage was spicy and there were so many more elements including boiled egg, cheese, garlic and a sauce that I am not sure what all was in it… it was yummy! And I was so full I didn’t think I would be able to eat again all day! This was an amazing tour!!
