The weekend began with a trip to Seward. We wanted to do a whale cruise with Justin and Lacey but it didn't leave until later in the afternoon so we went to the SeaLife center before the whale cruise. The weather this day was dismal. It was rainy and windy. The trick to preparing for this (typical) weather in Alaska during summer is layers! The whale cruise was almost like a roller coaster at sea. We caught some air a few times! Due to the weather, there was only one one whale sighting and that was brief. We were able to see it from inside the boat but I didn't manage to catch it on camera. Eating in Seward was another obstacle. Due to complications from Covid and slow recovery, most restaurants in Seward are operating with limited hours and limited staff. It was difficult for us to find a restaurant that was open and didn't have a long waiting list. We ended up finding a quick place for lunch but we headed back to Anchorage for dinner. The next morning, Sunday morning, we went to church together. On the way to church we realized that Denali was out. What that means here in Anchorage is that the weather in Anchorage and the weather near Denali are both favorable for viewing Denali. Since the mountain is so tall and so large, it is easily viewable from Anchorage on clear days when the weather is favorable despite the great distance between the mountain and Anchorage. On our way to a lookout point following church, we drove right by a mother and baby moose! This moose encounter was the most epic moose encounter I've ever experienced. Later in the afternoon we had planned a picnic/BBQ with several people from around Alaska. It was such a great day with some wonderful friends, and even a surprise bagpipe concert. Links!!
