Welcome to Part Two of our series on how to become a Nomad. Today we talk about retirement and why it's not too late. If you think our plan was 30 years in the making, think again. We are not budget travelers and retired in 2023 aged 51 and 54. How did we do it. Keep watching and we will show you how we did it. We talk about giving up our comfortable lives in the UK in 2004 to buy a Flower Shop in Florida and set another one up just before 3 hurricanes hit the State. We sold the shop we bought to focus all our efforts on the business we set up and we invested that money into a condo in Sarasota before the great Recession. Wow, what a mistake that was. We were in debt and struggling without adding any money to our pension pot since we left the UK. We moved our pension from our Company Schemes in the UK to a UK Government approved QROPS Pension Scheme in Malta. And in 4 years the value decreased by 50%. We took the Maltese Investment Company to Arbitration and won the case after several years. Finally we were moving forward. By 2018 we had sold the Condo and lost over $100K but were paying down our debts and started to finally contribute to our pension pot. By February 2020 we were out of debt.....and then COVID hit us and the World. We thought we would lose it all but as a business we pivoted to a delivery only business and our sales doubled overnight. We finally got rid of our 15 year old Dodge Durango and started to add as much as we could into paying down our mortgage, investing into the business and adding to the pot. Helen received a small inheritance, I received some compensation from a car accident and suddenly we were moving at a pace adding every single dollar into our retirement goal. Once we decided to become Nomads we hadn't reached the number that would allow us to retire comfortably and achieve the lifestyle we wanted, so with the help of Youtube and @2GoRoam we discovered 2 books. The Simple Path to Wealth and Die With Zero. Both were instrumental in changing our perception about retirement and how we could Retire in the style we wanted to. We sold the Business, House and Car and threw it all into the pot. We managed to pay the mortgage off just before we sold and became Nomads. Your perspective changes when you lose friends and relatives, when health issues hit you and when you realize you are a lot closer to the exit door than the entrance. Although we managed our retirement in 5 years the earlier you start the better. Starting young makes all the difference but if you are older it is never too late to achieve your goals. It requires dedication, sacrifice and focus, but it's worth it. Make sure you hit that notification bell so you can watch Part 3 next week.
