Here are the Top 10 Things You Can’t Miss if you’re visiting this iconic city—even if you only have 24 hours. Whether you’re here on a cruise stop, layover, or quick trip, this short hits the must-see spots that offer the best mix of wildlife, views, culture, food, and history. Featured in this video are 10 places I actually visited in a single jam-packed day in Cape Town, based on real experience and not just a list pulled from a brochure. This isn’t sugar-coated—it’s the real deal, from rough Uber rides to penguin encounters to markets that actually feel like Cape Town. Top 10 Things to Do in Cape Town, South Africa: 1. Boulders Beach Penguin Colony Come face to face with African penguins in their natural habitat. It’s about 45 minutes from Cape Town, but 100% worth it. The boardwalks give you great views, and if you’re lucky, you’ll also spot a dassie (Google it—it’s weirder than you think). Expect wind, sand, and a lot of penguin noise. 2. Table Mountain Cable Car One of the best urban mountain experiences anywhere. The rotating cable car gives you a 360-degree view as you ride to the top. Buy Fast Track tickets if you're on a tight schedule. The top offers panoramic views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and beyond. 3. Bo-Kaap Neighborhood The bright, color-block houses make it one of the most photographed places in Cape Town, but this area is also packed with history. Check out the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, grab a coffee, and buy spices at Atlas Trading Company. It’s not just pretty—it matters. 4. Long Street Cape Town’s wildest street mixes nightlife, architecture, local crafts, and a few surprises (like an ice cream shop that mixes in cereal). You don’t need to spend long here, but it’s worth walking through and grabbing a few souvenirs. 5. Company’s Garden It’s a central park surrounded by historic buildings, monuments, and a lot of squirrels that are way too bold. The garden connects you to several museums and gives you a taste of colonial history, urban green space, and public art all in one place. 6. Iziko South African Museum Some exhibits feel stuck in time (taxidermy, anyone?), but it also includes dinosaur fossils, whale skeletons, and newer science exhibits. Cheap, quirky, and totally unique—it’s not polished, but it's interesting. 7. Castle of Good Hope The oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. Even if you don’t go inside (it closes early), walking around the walls gives you a sense of the city’s military and colonial history. If forts are your thing, put this on the list. 8. Oranjezicht City Farm Market Set along the waterfront, this weekend market has a mix of fresh produce, local street food, boutique goods, and a younger, more local crowd than what you’ll find in the malls. Great for people-watching and grabbing a bite. 9. Mojo Market Less touristy than the Waterfront, Mojo in Sea Point is where you go for good live music, fast food with flavor, and a casual night out. I had an Indonesian rice bowl from House of Nasi Goreng that I’m still thinking about. 10. V&A Waterfront You’ll either love it or get overwhelmed fast. It’s huge—part shopping mall, part dining destination, part entertainment district. Skip the chains and head to the Watershed for local design, or Time Out Market for food from local vendors. Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s big for a reason. This list is based on one full day of sightseeing on a tight schedule. Everything in this Short was visited and filmed by me in a single trip.
