Welcome to Day 11 of our Hawaii Cruise, and today we’re spending the day in Kona on the Big Island. 🌋🌴 Kona is a tender port, which meant long lines early in the morning — so I waited until noon to go ashore, once things slowed down. That made it a shorter visit, but still a great chance to walk around town, explore the waterfront, and enjoy a relaxed Kona afternoon. While ashore, I met a crew member working in the Holland America Logo Shop who is getting ready for her first Alaska season. We had a great conversation about: • My favorite hiking spots in Alaska ports • Why the White Pass & Yukon Route in Skagway is a must-do 🚂 • And a story from 1980 about the Prinsendam — when my brother and I tried to get onboard… and it sank two weeks later (thankfully, everyone survived) Later that evening, just as dinner was beginning in the main dining room, the captain made an announcement that masks were now mandatory onboard. No one was quite sure what prompted the change, but with a five-day Pacific crossing ahead, staying healthy is critical — medical evacuation simply isn’t possible that far out at sea. A memorable day full of walking, conversations, and cruise memories — and now we get ready for the long journey home across the Pacific.
