There’s been outrage this week as P&O Ferries have fired 800 staff members without warning. The staff were played a video which told them about their redundancy and P&O ferries have suspected all services for now. Full article: https://emmacruises.com/po-ferries-and-po-cruises/ P&O cruises have received quite a bit of backlash for this despite the fact that the two companies P&O Ferries and P&O cruises are in no way linked. They did used to be though. The peninsular and oriental line, which is what P&O stands for actually goes back to the 1840s. They started offering ferry services in the 1960s and in the 1970s they expanded their cruise side by purchasing Princess Cruises and Sitmar cruises which would later become P&O Australia. In 2000 they decided to split out the cruise portion and they formed a company called P&O Princess, they sold the P&O Princess company to the Carnival Corporation in 2003 for 3.5 billion pounds. The ferry portion was sold to DP world which is a company that operates from Dubai. Apart from sharing the name and some small branding similarities the two companies are totally distinct.
