Welcome to an early morning walk through Brisbanes Royal Botanic Gardens, QUT and along the Brisbane River. The Brisbane Royal Botanic Gardens, officially known as the City Botanic Gardens, is a significant parkland located in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It holds historical importance as it is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the country. The gardens were established in 1828, just two years after the settlement of Brisbane. At that time, it was called the Moreton Bay Botanic Gardens. Lieutenant Henry Miller, the superintendent of convicts in the region, played a vital role in the initial development of the gardens. In the early years, the gardens were primarily tended by convict gardeners who were sentenced to hard labor. These convicts were responsible for clearing the land, constructing pathways, and cultivating various plants. Over the years, the gardens underwent expansions and developments under the supervision of different superintendents. Walter Hill, who served as the curator from 1855 to 1881, made significant contributions to the garden's growth. He introduced many new plant species, constructed the curator's cottage (now known as the Walter Hill Fountain), and enhanced the layout of the gardens. In 1959, Queen Elizabeth II granted the prefix "Royal" to the gardens, hence renaming them as the Brisbane Royal Botanic Gardens. This was in recognition of the gardens' horticultural significance and contribution to the city. In the late 20th century, the gardens underwent extensive replanting and renovation projects. This included the restoration of heritage structures, the creation of new garden sections, and the improvement of visitor facilities. The Brisbane Royal Botanic Gardens are currently managed and maintained by the Brisbane City Council. The council continues to invest in preserving and enhancing the gardens, ensuring their role as a prominent cultural and recreational destination for locals and tourists. Today, the Brisbane Royal Botanic Gardens span over 52 hectares (128 acres) and feature a diverse range of plants, including both native and exotic species. It offers visitors walking paths, picnic areas, ornamental ponds, and stunning views of the Brisbane River. The gardens remain a popular location for leisure activities, events, and educational programs focused on horticulture and environmental conservation.
