Can Kerala Become the World's First 100% Sustainable Tourist Destination? Sikha Surendran, the Director of Kerala Tourism, shares insights into Kerala’s tourism strategies and initiatives for the 2026-2027 season. Kerala continues to emphasize responsible and sustainable tourism, launching a campaign that encourages travelers to tour responsibly and “travel for good.” The state targets its traditional key markets such as the UK, US, France, Germany, the Middle East, and Australia while also exploring emerging markets. Kerala’s compact geography, supported by four international airports, allows tourists to experience diverse attractions—including beaches, backwaters, forests, and hill stations—within a short span of 7 to 10 days. A significant focus for Kerala Tourism is Ayurveda and wellness, with the upcoming international Ayurveda and wellness conclave scheduled in Calicut, highlighting the state’s position as a wellness destination. Kerala is also promoting itself as a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) hub. The state hosted India’s first tourism conclave on MICE and is in the process of establishing a dedicated MICE bureau to consolidate resources such as hotels, convention centers, and transport operators to better serve this segment. Additionally, Kerala is pioneering gender-inclusive and safe tourism. The state has collaborated with UN Women to hold the world’s first global conference on gender-inclusive tourism, focusing on women’s safety, transgender rights, and community inclusivity. Safety and gender audits have been conducted in 72 destinations, and a draft SOP has been formulated to ensure safer travel experiences.
