There are around 2,650 glaciers in Spitzbergen. They were formed during the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. During the summer, they advance rapidly, and the bays are invaded by icebergs. These slow-moving, uninterrupted giants of ice carve out the sharp, tapering the silhouette of the island, whose name literally means "Pointed Mountains".
