In this episode of Now Go See It, we visit one of the most remote and rugged corners of Iceland, where cruise passengers get a rare chance to explore a town most travelers never reach. Ísafjörður (EE-sah-fyor-thur) is the largest town in the Westfjords region… though with a population of just 2,700, it still feels more like a fishing village than a city. Surrounded by steep mountains and calm fjord waters, this place is as real and unfiltered as Iceland gets. The great thing about the Ísafjörður cruise port is how easy it is to explore on your own. You don’t need a shuttle. You don’t need a tender. You don’t need a guide. You just walk off the ship, follow a gravel path, and within five minutes you’re downtown. In this video, we’ll show you exactly what to do with a day in port—from walking tours and food stops to museums, monuments, and a few quirky surprises. We start our day with a self-guided walk through town, heading up Aðalstræti, the main street lined with shops, cafes, and charming old buildings. We’ll stop at the colorful rainbow walkway in the main square, pop into a few boutiques selling Icelandic crafts, and break for coffee and pastries at Kaffihús Bakarans. (Don’t miss the Kanelfletta or the layered prune cake—trust us.) From there, we visit the Monument to the Lost Sailors, a moving tribute to the fishing families of the Westfjords. Next door, we check out the Culture House—a former hospital turned community gallery space that’s free to visit. There's even a public playground with a trampoline and zip line that's free for anyone to use (yes, we tried it). We’ll also take you along a scenic coastal path that hugs the shoreline with quiet views of the fjord and seabirds flying overhead. Later, we loop back to the cruise port area to explore the Westfjords History Museum. This three-level museum is full of artifacts from the region’s fishing past, and the attic has ropes, tools, and all kinds of equipment you won’t find anywhere else. Right nearby, there’s a free public restroom, a microbrewery called Dokkan Brugghús, and an odd little outdoor sculpture park made up of driftwood, anchors, unmarked whale bones, and rusted fishing gear. It’s weird and wonderful. Oh—and be sure to look up from the ship to spot the Troll’s Seat, a rock formation tied to local folklore. We’ll also talk about popular shore excursions in Ísafjörður, including whale watching tours and the puffin trip to Vigur Island. These excursions are in high demand and availability is limited, so we strongly recommend booking in advance. You can find our top picks and links on our website at NowGoSeeIt.com. Whether you’re planning to explore on foot or book an organized tour, Ísafjörður is a port that rewards curiosity and a slower pace. There may not be a checklist of blockbuster attractions, but if you’re looking for an authentic slice of Icelandic life—this is it.
