We've wanted to visit this castle in Königswinter, Germany for ages and it certainly didn't disappoint. Because the estate is located just a short distance from the major Rhine cities, it makes the perfect afternoon escape. We took the Drachenfelsbahn funicular up the mountain which made the trip extra special but you can easily hike up the trail through the Siebengebirge mountains too! Built in the late 19th century between 1882 and 1884 as a private residence, Drachenburg Castle is famous for its beautiful fairytale architecture and breath-taking panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. It was originally commissioned by Baron Stephan von Sarter who was a wealthy banker and financier. Despite pouring his fortune into this massive project he actually never lived in the castle himself! Today, the building stands as one of the most magnificent palaces in Germany. We're taking you inside for a full walkthrough to explore the staterooms, the Servant Quarters and the Coach House. The interiors are a masterpiece filled with beautiful stained glass windows, intricate wood carvings and murals depicting classic Germanic myths. It really is beautiful!
