Exploring Glover Garden & Nagasaki | Diamond Princess Japan | Episode 8

This is the 8th video in our series about our cruise around Japan on the Diamond Princess! Because the Diamond Princess docked right in Nagasaki, we opted to spend the day exploring the city on our own. Rather than touring sites related to the impact of the atomic blast on Nagasaki, we opted to explore some the older history of the city. It was raining on the day we were in Nagasaki, so luckily we had bought some umbrellas at the hells of Beppu. We first located a post office to send some postcards bank to the USA. We then headed up the historic stone street on Minami-Yamate hill to Glover Garden. Glover Garden in is a captivating open-air museum set on the Minami-Yamate hillside. It preserves 19th-century Western-style homes and mansions—including Japan's oldest surviving wooden Western-style building—and offers sweeping panoramic views of Nagasaki Port. * Thomas Blake Glover: The garden is centered around the former mansion of Thomas Glover, a Scottish merchant who arrived in 1859. He was instrumental in Japan’s industrialization by helping found modern shipbuilding, coal mining, and the Kirin Brewery. His 1863 home served as a secret meeting place for anti-shogunate samurai domains (like the Choshu and Satsuma) during the end of the Edo period. The main attraction of the garden is the Former Glover House, the oldest wooden Western-style building in Japan. Thomas Glover (1838-1911) was a Scottish merchant who moved to Nagasaki after the opening of its port to foreign trade in 1859. He later assisted some of the revolutionaries who would eventually overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate in the Meiji Restoration. Active in various industries, including shipbuilding and mining, Glover features prominently in the early history of Japan's industrialization. The historic buildings feature an intriguing blend of architectural styles. The buildings feature European colonial layouts, French windows, and British chimneys combined with traditional Japanese tiled roofs. [1, 2] Cultural Significance * Madame Butterfly: The Glover House is widely believed to be the setting that inspired Giacomo Puccini's famous opera Madame Butterfly. We then visited the Mitsubishi Dock House to enjoy spectacular views of the harbor. We ended our tour of Glover Garden at the the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Museum to see the massive dragons and floats from the city's famous Okunchi Festival. Then we explored the shops along the hill and and found some local bites. We also toured Oura Cathedral - it is considered the oldest standing Christian church in Japan.
